Lemony and Jaques sister is named Kit, but do we know her as someone else in the series?
We have three possibilities so far. Olivia, The Ducchess of Winnipeg, and The Baudelaire's mother.
Let's take a look at the three in turn.
1. Olivia
The only proof that I have for this is one disjointed phrase in TCC, pg 155.
"I have no idea," Olivia admitted. "I've been looking for the Snicket File myself. Every time I see a piece of paper blow by, I chase after it to see if it's one of the pages."
Compare that to LSUA pgs 75 and 76.
"Whenever I walk along the streets of this city, I grab whatever newspapers are blowing around on the sidewalks, just in case important files from the archive were not destroyed after all and have blown all the way back to the city. I must be a ridiculous sight - a grown woman wading into the Fountain of Victorious Finance just to retrieve a scrap of newspaper- but it's my only chance of clearing the name of Lemony Snicket, if indeed he is still alive.... I give them to you, my dear cheesemakers [the same cheesemakers Lemony was corresponding with] so that you might put them with the rest of my brother's papers."
Possibly in the Snicket file? That would match up with everything we've seen so far... The elusive Snicket Sister, who we've had no proof about, except for the K on the family tree (formerly thought to be Jacques widow, (except that's not more then likely not the case, since there aren't any other spouses mentioned on the tree, (despite the fact we know they exist (Thanks Stacy!)))) and LSUA pgs 75 and 76. So, now we have a possible suspect for the part.
Unfortunately, there's a stumbling block. TCC, pg 151. "If Jacques Snicket or another Volunteer comes inside and asks me if his brother is alive, I tell them." Wouldn't she say "Our Brother" if she was his sister? Maybe. But then again, she could be saying his brother to disguise the fact to the Bauds, and us, that she is their sister.
Also, Snicket at one point tells his Sister he is coming north to find her. And at the time of his writing that book, Olivia was already dead. So, let's safely assume we can eliminate here.
the Duchess of Winnipeg
It's a long shot, I know, but I came across this while re-reading The Carnivorous Carnival:
On page 36 of TCC, Lemony is discussing the various things you might find out by going through another person's belongings and says, "you might examine some letters your sister recieved recently, for instance, and learn that she was planning on running away with an archduke."
If his sister actually ran away with an archduke (and married him) she would be a duchess.
The Duchess (R) does refer to Lemony as Mr. Snicket (UA), but this could be for reasons as yet undiscovered by readers. She also corresponds with K, and asks her to pass some information along the the Dairy. If K is Jaques' wife, it would make sense for R to communicate with her after Jaques' death.
That info was sent into me by Joni, who brings up some good points, but is refuted by Talia.
Talia found some evidence that disproves everything.
"In the letter from her (the Duchess) that might have been fake, she says that there was "the portrait of your sister and me, the portrait we told everyone was your sister and me but really wasn't..." So she can't be the Snicket sister if there was a picture of her and the Snicket sister together. In the note at the end of the letter, Lemony even said that they were real pictures. R cannot be the Snicket sister. It's impossible."
And so, the identity of the remaing Snicket sibling continues to remain hidden, and we wait, for a more clarifying answer.
Jyn writes in to tell me that the Ducchess of Winnipeg can't be the Snicket sister, because of what Esmé says in TSS.
On TSS p.297, Esme mentions wanting to steal the Winnipeg fortune, which implies that it is a separate thing entirely from the Snicket fortune.
So, that boots her out of the running. Another person we had been suspecting and for reasons listed Here, was the Baudelaire's mother. She was the most likely suspect but info from TGG refutes that all. Check out the link for clarification.
