It would certainly seem like it. Or would it?
The paragraph reads "Because of the evidence discussed on pg 9... experts now suspect that there may in fact be one survivor of the fire, but the survivor's whereabouts are unknown."
Note this one important fact: The note doesn't say WHICH fire.
Now, skip to LSUA. read the script excerpt from Zombies in the snow, and look at the hidden message: "Attention! Hidden in the snowman is a survivor of the fire. Meet us in the town where this takes place. Bring the three children. Your new assistant is not one of us. Beware!"
Now, what else do we have about ZitS? Hey, Zits... ha ha ha. Sorry. Anyway...
We have photos, that's right. What photos do we have... hmm... The Forest Scene, the Sled Chase Scene, The Icicles Scene...The Snowman.. three chilren... Gustav working on the snowman...
Three children????
Let's take a look at them... hmmm. Two of them are at Prufrock... what happened to the third? And why do they all look the same?
Triplets! Prufrock? They must be the Quagmires...
One more thing.
I wonder if anyone else noticed this: "Because of the evidence discussed on pg 9...." Just out of curiosity, I looked at the information on pg 9 of the Hostile Hospital, and who do you think it talked about?
Yup, you guessed it.
Ya-hah! says the skeptical soul (and i know you're out there, I can hear you breathing), what about in TCC when the Hook Handed Man says that Olaf found out that one of the Baud parents is still alive?
To that, I have to give you the quote Lemony Snicket gives us shortly before: "It was quite some time before they learned that what the hook handed man said turned out to be something different from what they thought when they heard him ouside the door of the freaks' caravan." (TCC Pg 74)
Take that how you will, but I'm almost certain it refers to the Baudelaire parent, however, I was also almost certain that Beatrice was the Bauds mom, and now i think differently, as you well know. So, while it may refer to the Baud parent statement, it may refer to something else. Time will tell, but Snicket wont.
One last piece of cicumstantial evidence I can give you is this: If you use the Sebald Code on pg 9 of the Hostile Hospital, what does it read?
" of after for looked Isadora the Quigley Olaf escaped see the notebook only page had volunteers searching," Which, while it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, does make a certain amount, doesn't it? (Thanks Bobby)
Finally, with the inclusion of information from TSS, at the end of the Sixth chapter, the VFD Snow Scout unmasks himself, and reveals himself as Quigley Quagmire, and claims that he thinks he is the survivor of the fire.
So, for now, let's assume that Quigley is, in fact the survivor, and as much as we might want to believe otherwise, both Baud parents are dead.
So, there's a survivor of the Quagmire fire, but could there be a survivor of other fires? Specifically the Baudelaire fire?
If there is, it's The Baud's mom. The Baud's father is dead. TSS, the final page of narrative: "And certainly, the dead men in the Baudelaire's lives, like jacques Snicket, and their father, would never rise up again..." That's not an exact quote (I don't have the book with me) but it's close evough for government work, as they say.
And if there is more then one Survivor? Stacy elaborates: "The survivor on page nine could very well be Quigly - but would that make sense? The picture and quote was found in the Snicket file, and the picture is of Jaques, Lemony, and the Baudelaire parents.
"The survivor, however, could be refering to Kit, the Bauds mother, or even Lemony himself - after all, it is the Snicket file.
"After all, we don't know where the Bauds mother is, and Kit DEFINATELY spent time in the mountains where the movie was made - Lemony even says in TSS that he is going up north to find her." (Thanks Stacy)
