The extra pages of notes at the back of The Bad Beginning: The Rare Edition are confusing to say the least. There are all sort of hints and pickings of things that might happen, and things that have already happened that it is hard to figure out exactly what is going on in these notes. Fortunately for me, A Volunteer Fact Detective has sat down and figured out a highly plausible series of events that incorporates most, if not all of the elements found in the pages of notes. With no further ado, I present Mr Ethan J. Cashwell, and his theory of notes: Please note that everything I type from here on is just what is supported by the notes.
The day that the Baudelaire mansion burned down seems like a reasonable place to start. At the beginning of the day Count Olaf burned down the Valorous Farms dairy, the V.F.D Original "Safe Place". The Baudelaire parents were actually the ones hosting the V.F.D. party that was typed down on the burnt piece of paper in the Autobiography.
This was the reason they sent the children away to the beach. Olaf arrived, grabbed the fancy brandy away from whoever was using it and began issuing his demands. It began to rain while he was ranting and Olaf became enraged because he knew that his plan to burn down the dairy was foiled and slammed the brandy bottle down on the wooden table.
Count Olaf burned down the house but not before stealing Mr. Baudelaire's credit card. The house bagan to burn and the V.F.Ders,both good and bad, scrambled downt the secret trapdoor and out of another trying to find safety. One of the two Baudelair parents managed to get to the Fickle Fountail (or the Fountain of Victorious Finance, the notes say they both had big hollow spaces to hide things like the fowl fountain) and hide.
Meanwhile, Count Olaf used Mr. Baudelaire's Credit card to bribe someone at the royal gardens to give him a plant. This was the same plant and credit card that Justice Strauss was talking about. I think the plant may be peppermint that Olaf plans to use against the Children in case things get really bad.
This is where my description starts to jump around a bit, the plant was the flowers that the baudelaire orphans saw the 2 white powder faced women put into the cardboard vase in The Marvelous Marriage.
Now I bring you to the end of the series. They will all end up back at Briny beach where Violet picks up a stone just like in the 1st book but instead of dropping it because she saw it was Mr. Poe, throws it because she sees it is Count Olaf.
The notes also support that Mr.Poe might have something to hide in his top hat aiding the suspicion that Mr.Poe might be in V.F.D.
