Feh, you say, what a preposterous notion. Or is it? Thanks to a young lang lady with the screen name of Balyrina, she brought to my attention something interesting, which I thought I would share with you.
"As I hope you all know, the Baudelaires have been through a lot. They have been isolated for a long time from people they know. They have been scattered across the globe (sort of) and they have been performing errands that perplexes them (like climbing up an elevator shaft and riding a sailboat across Lake Lachrymose in the middle of a hurricane). Soon no one will be searching for them any longer. You are probably wondering, "WHAT IS WITH THE ITALICS?!?!" Look on page 39 in Lemony Snicket: The Unauthorized Autobiography. I will quote the page and underline the parts that concern the Baudelaires and I will italicize the parts that concern the Quagmires.
R: I will finish. We are entering people's homes, taking young children you show exceptional observational and/or notetaking skills, and isolating them, for long periods at least, from people they know. We assign them to strangers and scatter them across the globe, performing errands that are perplexing to them, until their ankles are healed, until we know they can be trusted, and until we know that no one is searching for them any longer. Then we bring them to headquarters so they can learn the skills they need before they are introduced back into society, in order to make sure the world remains, as we say, quiet.
--Lemony Snicket, Lemony Snicket: The Unauthorized Autobiography (HarperCollins, 2002) pp. 39 So, according to her notes, it would certainly seem like the Baudelaires are being trained to take their place in VFD, though certain problems do arise from this theory.
Taking the sailboat across Lake Lachrymose was not really a perplexing task to them. They were going to find Aunt Josephine. The way I understood the quote from R to read, they performed tasks that at the time, they didn't understand why they were doing them. I don't think any of the Baudelaires have come across any sort of task like this.
Also, as far as we know, the Bauds haven't been tattooed on their ankles yet.
Though that may mean absolutely nothing, as on pg 191 of LSUA, it reads "Since the schism, we have realized that it is not wise to permanently mark onself when the meaning of the symbol may change at any moment."
But still, this is some over all thinking here, and it's something I hadn't considered, so full kudos to the young lady who thought this up, and as for the FAQ answer?
I, personally, feel that the Bauds are NOT being trained for VFD. I think there's a large amount of coincidence, but something inside me tells me they aren't. However, you might agree with Balyrina, and if so, more power to you.
