Is Poe in VFD?
Mr Poe was last seen dropping the Bauds off at the Village of Fowl Devotees. After that, through one circumstance or another, we lost track of him, and then the next time we see him, he's at Briny Beach, meeting the Bauds, and wanting to help them.
However, there are a number of things that point to the unsettling possibility that Mr Poe is in VFD. First of all, when we first meet him on Briny Beach in TBB, it's mentioned that he has a tall top hat, and that he puts it back on his head. In TBB, the Rare Edition, there is a note in the back that says that passage originally read "He put it back on his head carefully" implying that there is something hidden there.
Also, when the Bauds first see him, they aren't afraid of him. n fact, they know him, since they had seen him at many dinner parties that their parents had thrown. Which is something VFDer's do, when they get together. They have a dinner party.
In LSUA, listed under disguises, there is an OperaGoer's disguise, which is listed as a Top Hat, Dark Coat, Formal Shoes, and Money, to give the appearance of wealth. Interestingly, every single other disguise listed on there is something we've seen, except for this, which sounds suspiciously like what Mr Poe wears.
Mr Poe is also always dropping them off in the care of someone who is in VFD, or closely related thereto. Count Olaf and Justice Strauss, Uncle Monty, Aunt Josephine (whose husband was in VFD, before he died), The Lucky Smells Lumbermill, which made the Emerald Wood for the VFDer's houses, Prufrock Prep, which is very possibly a VFD Training School, Esmé Squalor, and Hector. From then on, Mr Poe is gone.
In addition, there is another piece of evidence Mr. Poe has some connection in this affair: We know that Quigley Quagmire CC:ed J.S. on his telegram to the Queequeg; the telegraph gave the Baudelaires their instructions to go to Briny Beach. Mr. Poe also showed up at Briny Beach due to a message from J.S. But, Mr. Poe claimed it may be from Geraldine Julienne, but obviously that shouldn't make sense even to him. However, if he has learned that Geraldine Julienne was involved in trapping his sister at the Daily Punctilio, he may be there on a devious mission, trading in for his sister's safety. (Thanks Rick!)
